Todd Haley will look to exploit weakness of opposing defense

Steelers.com Live did an interview with Todd Haley on Thursday afternoon. Bob Labriola talked about all parts of the offense and what Haley wants to try and do in Pittsburgh. They also talked about the potential use of FB, TE, his philosophy on offense overall, and much more.

One thing that caught my attention in particular was when he was asked about how he'll approach his offensive gameplan each week.

He talked about how he will look to exploit the weakness of the defense as much as he'll look to emphasize the strength of the offense. That's what you want out of a coordinator, somebody who's not afraid to attack the weak link in a team no matter who the opponent is. No more of this mentality of having to play a certain team a certain way just because that how you've done it before.

You can talk about BA's philosophy all you want and the Steelers in general but everybody knows that they used the mentality of, we're going to run our offense no matter what. It will be nice to see if Haley can actually put together some gameplans that actually involve exploiting a weakness regularly instead of just now and then.

View the full article

Mike Adams testes positive marijuana

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that Ohio State offensive lineman Mike Adams tested positive for marijuana at the Scouting Combine.

Adams, as La Canfora explains it, didn’t know about the positive result when meeting with teams at the Scouting Combine. Obviously, Adams wouldn’t have known; the results aren’t made available until well after the players have left Indy.
But Adams surely knew that he’d smoked marijuana, and if anything he said to teams about marijuana use during Combine interviews was later contradicted by the positive test result, that could be viewed as a far more significant problem than the positive test result.

Teams generally don’t care about marijuana use. They care about whether, if forced to choose between football and marijuana, the player will choose football. Most do, providing clean samples during the repeated unannounced tests performed until the player graduates from the substance-abuse program. But some, like former NFL running back Onterrio Smith, can’t quit smoking. And as a result they have to quit playing. And the team that drafted a player who ultimately can’t play ends up holding accountable the people who drafted him.

Making a positive test at the Scouting Combine an even larger red flag is the fact that the players know they’re going to be tested. Thus, as many league sources have told PFT over the years, anyone who tests positive at the Combine either has an addiction, or is incredibly dumb.

From PFT

Anybody think the Steelers will seriously consider a guy that toked a doobie before the biggest workout of his career?

View the full article

Max Starks will be ready to go by July

Max Starks tweeted that his rehab is going well and hopes to be ready by July. He has yet to receive any offer from the Steelers and as far as I know he hasn't gotten any interest around the league.

A 300+ lineman who is coming off ACL surgery though usually won't attract much attention. I'm sure he'll still be available if the Steelers want him later in the summer. We'd have to hope though that this rehab is helping him stay in shape, unlike last year when things didn't go so well in the offseason and he was released.

I would like to see him back still, he'd come at a bargain considering his experience. I liked the combination of Gilbert at RT and Starks at LT, however the money that Colon is getting paid will weigh into the decision too like it or not.

View the full article

Why the Steelers have to play in Denver...again!

We're all unhappy campers in the Steeler Nation ever since the schedule came out and we saw on week 1 that it's out to Denver to play again, minus Ryan Clark of course.

Ed Bouchette's blog points out some reasons why the Steelers are stuck traveling to mile high yet again.

Reader: I think people's gripes with going to Denver and about having to play at Denver....Again. It's part perception, part legitimate issue. In the last decade the Broncos have come to Pittsburgh once, in 2006. In that same decade, the Steelers have played regular season games in Denver in 2003, 2007, 2009 and now in 2012, along with a preseason game in 2010 and a post season game in 2011. Steelers fans have those away games stuck in their heads because Ryan Clark can't play in them and it seems as if the NFL really wants Pittsburgh to play in Denver and not the other way around. This pattern of scheduling seems to fly in the face of what the NFL said it wanted to do when it changed the scheduling rotation as it applies to interdivisional play.

Ed: The NFL has a schedule of opponents for each team that rotates and involves only two wild cards – in which a team plays two AFC opponents based on where each finishes in its divisions, as the Steelers do this year with the Jets and Titans, both finishing second in their divisions, as did the Steelers. A few years ago, I believe it was 2009, the NFL made a slight adjustment to the rotation of home and away games because they were trying to mitigate teams from the East Coast having to travel to the West Coast too often in one season. The Steelers also play in Oakland. That is why San Diego will make its third straight appearance here (fourth if you count the playoff game in the 2009 season) since 2008 and the Steelers will make their third straight trip to Denver since 2007. We can debate all we want about whether flying to Denver vs. flying to San Diego makes a hill of difference, but that’s how the NFL saw it. It’s the same reason why the Steelers have played at Arizona twice since 2007 and the Cardinals have not played here in that time, but Seattle has played here twice since 2007 and the Steelers have not gone there during that time. The NFL did not just change the Steelers schedule in this instance, they did it to all affected by it. In this case, the league was trying to do what it thought was fair for travel purposes.

Link to his blog for the full chat transcript.

View the full article
